Information for airlines

Overview

Situated less than 20 minutes outside the UK’s thriving second city, Birmingham Airport is the UK’s seventh largest airport (third largest outside of London), handling approximately 11.5 million passengers in 2023. With strong growth plans, passenger throughput is set to increase approximately 50% to 18 million by 2033. Our growth strategy remains diverse, with focus placed on both low cost and long-haul development.

Undergoing a significant period of investment, current and future development projects include: Aircraft stand standardisation, installation of 12,000 solar panels to produce 20% of the airport’s required energy, expansion of electric vehicle charging points, and development of infrastructure to facilitate the arrival of the HS2 high speed rail network.

Destinations and airlines

Birmingham Airport is home to around 30 airlines serving over 130 direct routes and offering over 450 one-stop destinations. Catering to both full service and low-cost airlines, Birmingham Airport’s traffic is comprised of 11% business and 89% leisure.

Located at the heart of the Midlands, Birmingham Airport is accessible to 83% of the population of England and Wales within a 2-hour rail or road journey.

Terminal facilities

Having recently undergone significant refurbishment to open a brand-new state of the art security hall, Birmingham Airport’s single terminal operation facilitates a seamless and efficient passenger journey.

Our terminal features 115 check-in desks, 58 self-service kiosks and 63 aircraft stands (14 of which benefit from airbridge connections).

11,000 sqm of commercial space (including 1,850 sqm walk-through World Duty Free store) offers passengers an extensive range of liquor, beauty, accessories and confectionery, with luxury brands including Chanel, YSL and Dior.

Surface access

Nestled conveniently within the heart of the UK’s motorway network and benefitting from direct rail services from our on-site station, Birmingham Airport is the UK’s best-connected airport in terms of surface access.

Enabling both long and short rail connections, Birmingham International station provides an impressive 4 trains per hour to London Euston and 6 per hour to Birmingham City Centre, alongside a comprehensive timetable serving key cities including Manchester, Edinburgh, Liverpool and Glasgow.

Upon completion, Birmingham Airport will be the only airport directly served by the UK’s new high speed rail project (HS2). Linked to the terminal by an automated people mover, HS2 will transport passengers from the airport to London in 37 minutes, connecting Birmingham to the capital in comparable times to Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton.
