The Wellbeing Team at Birmingham Airport has been awarded Best Wellbeing Team: Large Company at the Great British Workplace Wellbeing Awards 2025.

Published 1 April 2025

The airport’s award winning, voluntary Wellbeing Team, made up of colleagues from across the business, won the award in recognition of its strong commitment to colleague wellbeing, which is underpinned by its Company Values. The Airport was also shortlisted in a further three award categories: Most Inspiring Employee, Best Physical Wellbeing Initiative and Mental Wellbeing Advocate.

The organisation’s Wellbeing Team has led on a variety of colleague programmes to help foster an internal culture that prioritises mental health including an expansion of the mental health first aid initiative. The increased scheme has trained nearly 50 mental health first aiders across the organisation to date to enable colleagues to proactively support their peers by recognising warning signs of mental ill health.

In an additional bid to de-stigmatise mental health, a series of regular specialist ‘talk clubs’ have been introduced by the team, providing colleagues with a valuable safe space to reflect and talk about their feelings whether work or home related. Birmingham Airport’s Wellbeing Team has also acknowledged the intrinsic link between physical and mental health and has launched physical exercise programmes including virtual Pilates classes, colleague boot camp sessions and a regular ‘climb with the CEO’ challenge, the third of these to happen in May. In October 2024, the group delivered an organisation-wide ‘BHX Wellbeing Week’ providing a structured timetable of wellbeing activities including occupational health check-in appointments, complimentary massages and mindfulness sessions.

Commenting on the award, Antoinette Farrell-Jones, People Director at Birmingham Airport said: "We’re delighted to have won the Best Wellbeing Team: Large Company award at the Great British Workplace Wellbeing Awards. This award is a testament to BHX’s Wellbeing Team’s commitment of improving our colleague’s lives at work and we have made significant strides in the past 18 months with the launch of a range of wellbeing-focused programmes including our successful Mental Health First Aider scheme, colleague talk clubs and free physical exercise classes.

“ Each year we remain committed to exploring new innovative solutions that embed wellbeing within our colleague culture and are excited for what this year will bring in line with our company Values that makes us Proud to work at BHX.”
